Beginning-of-Year Math Intervention Assessments: What I Look For & Why It Matters

Image
The beginning of the school year can be busy.  There are schedules to create, students to get to know, materials to organize, and intervention groups to plan. When students need math intervention, it can be tempting to jump right into instruction as quickly as possible. However, I have found that spending just  15–20 minutes learning how a student thinks about mathematics  can save countless hours of ineffective instruction later. Before I begin intervention lessons, I want to understand what students already know, what strategies they are using, and where their mathematical understanding begins to break down. As a math intervention teacher, I assess my Tier 2 and Tier 3 students in grades K–4 individually. Depending on the student, I may complete the assessment in one sitting or split it into two shorter sessions.  The goal is not to overwhelm students with a long assessment.  The goal is to gather enough information to determine the best place to begin instruc...

Introduction and Welcome to Mr. Lee's Learners Blog

Hello and welcome, learners of all ages! I am thrilled to introduce myself, Eric Lee, an experienced elementary school teacher with a passion for empowering students and fostering a love for learning. Through this blog, Mr. Lee's Learners, I aim to share my knowledge, insights, and resources, providing you with an exciting and engaging educational experience.

A Journey through Teaching:

With 11 years of teaching experience under my belt, I have had the privilege of working with students from various grade levels, allowing me to develop a comprehensive understanding of their needs and learning styles. My journey began in the world of 2nd grade, where I spent three years fostering the fundamental building blocks of education. Then I took a big jump and went to 6th grade, but only for one year.

From there, I ventured into 1st grade, honing my teaching skills and witnessing the remarkable growth of young minds. Embracing new challenges, I spent four years guiding and empowering 4th graders, instilling in them a sense of curiosity, critical thinking, and independent learning.

Transition to Math Intervention:

As our educational landscape evolves, so do we as educators. This upcoming 2026-2027 I will be entering my 4th year as a math intervention teacher, where I will have the opportunity to work closely with students who require additional support and guidance in their mathematical journeys. This position has been so fulfilling helping students ranging from kindergarten through sixth grade to build their confidence in mathematics.
